Financial Stress to Fossil Wonderland: My Roundabout Journey Into Paleontological Research

Part of the Science-in-Action Speaker Series at CSM
Wed Nov 20, 2019
5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Speaker
Larry Taylor

Larry TaylorLarry Taylor has dreamed of being a scientist his entire life. He worked full-time throughout his undergraduate career to eventually earn a masters degree in genetics, teach at a community college for several years, and work in medical research at Stanford for one year. He is currently pursuing a PhD at UC Berkeley. At Berkeley, his research focuses on his first love- paleontology, where he studies the migration behaviors of prehistoric whales. While at Berkeley, he has helped build a community college program that brings community college students to Berkeley for a fossil-based lab course meant to fill course goals in a class they're taking on their home campus. The overarching goals of the program have been to provide an enhanced educational opportunity for community college students and provide better access for diverse, traditionally underrepresented students to STEM and academia in general.
